Clever Convention: Brilliant Brains

cc-artworkEach month The Edge at the State Library of Queensland rounds up some unconventionally clever people to thrill, amaze, and regale you with their ubundant knowledge of the earthly realm. But don’t stress, this isn’t just a another lecture, speech or sermon where you sit stifly in your chair. There is tea, talk and time for you to get up close and personal as each of our virtuosos also demonstrate their craft.

Under the spotlight this month at the Clever Convention is the brilliant brain. Joining us will be Dr Matthew Hynd, neuroscientist and tea guru, and local crafter and Your Organ Grinder owner, Simmone Spring.

Matthew will be taking you on a journey to show you the advancement of Homo sapiens to Homo cyberneticus. Matthew’s interests lie at the convergence of neuroscience, nanotechnology and synthetic biology. He’s worked everywhere, man, and done everything, from developing implantable neural prosthetic devices to serving as the Director of Neurotechnology Research & Development at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering – the world’s largest college devoted to nanotechnology. After returning to Australia in 2010, Dr. Hynd became the Chief Tea Guru at SLURP and currently devotes his spare time to working with the Queensland Brain Bank at the University of Queensland.

With a more hands on approach, Simmone will be putting her crafting skills to good use as she helps you create your own miniature brain to take home. The piece will be created in the style of her beautiful works for Your Organ Grinder.

Your ticket price includes an adventurous tea from the amazing crew at Slurp whose flavours include strawberries and champagne, prickly pear, chocolate truffle and coco cabana!
